Georgia loses to Florida by 12. They were up 17, I think, during the last couple of minutes.
The one time we put on a press, we got a turnover.
Why doesn't Fox at least try different defenses? What about a press? What about the 1-3-1? We're down 10 points late in the second half and we just let them walk the ball up the floor? I can coach better than that!
We're 13 and 11 overall. At 4 and 7 in the league, Georgia is in next to last place in the SEC.
Fox takes the credit for the 20 win seasons. He has to take the blame for this one. Sure, we've had some bad breaks, but if your team never wins close games, never beats higher ranked teams, then something is wrong with the recruiting and the in-game coaching.
I don't know what everybody else was expecting in year 8 of the Fox regime, but this wasn't it. No NCAA wins in 8 seasons? Lower reaches of the SEC? Sure his guys are graduating, but I can field an intramural team with grad students. Doesn't mean I'm a good coach.
Fox looked pretty good with Felton's players, Trey Thompkins, Travis Leslie, Dustin Ware and Jeremy Price. But with his own guys, Fox looks totally out-matched by some of the other good coaches.
We finally beat Tech. Other than that, I can't think of any highlights for the season.
Meanwhile, the other coaches are starting to recruit better. Alabama and Avery Johnson will be a great looking squad next year. Tennessee will be better. Florida and South Carolina are at the top of the league now.
Georgia seems to be heading in the opposite direction.
This game might have forced McGarity's hand.

Snakebit!
Sounds like a bad movie. Looks like one, too.
Last week we got the report that Turtle Jackson had committed. Had me excited. I should have known bad news was coming. I felt something in my bones. I thought it might have been the rheumatism. Nope. Worse. UGA basketball.
Sure enough our collective hopes are jarred once again. This time, it's the arrest of Brandon Morris. The AJC reports that he was arrested for felony possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.
We can harp on "overzealous Athens Clarke County police" if we want, but you can't absolve players just because they're players. Guys have to take responsibility.
Consider the record over the last few years:
2007: Takais Brown, Mike Mercer and Albert Jackson were suspended for class attendance issues.
2008: Billy Humphrey suspended for underage drinking.
2008: Billy Humphrey dismissed
2010: Albert Jackson arrested for hit and run of parked car.
2012: Donte Williams arrested for possession at Lenox Square Mall.
2014: J.J. Frazier arrested for driving without a license.
I could go on. I chose three incidents from the Fox tenure, and three from Felton's. I chose three Athens law enforcement arrests, two from the Atlanta area, and one student discipline matter.
I know that UGA football also has bizarre arrests and problems, but the margin for error with basketball's thirteen-scholarship limit is so small. The impact is much greater when a basketball player gets in trouble.
I could talk about untimely injuries and all sorts of admission matters that impact hoops recruitment (like the Charles Mitchell situation), but you get the point. Every year, it's something.

Great Effort, Guys!
No need to hang your heads after this one. We started off way too slow. We didn't give up, though, and we made it a game at the end. LSU wins, 68 to 63.
We needed a few baskets from our big guys. If we go 3 of 20 from the field for our 3's, 4's, and 5's, we're not going to win.
Great game, though, by KCP. Career-high 32 points and 13 rebounds. I think he improved his draft stock, so it's really, really doubtful that he comes back.
Charles Mann had 15 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. He's going to be a good one, folks. Kenny Gaines had 6 points, 5 rebounds and 3 blocks.
We end the season 15 and 17.
If KCP comes back, I think the team should be competitive. We still wouldn't have quality bigs, unless someone makes a huge step forward in the off-season. Didn't happen this year, so it's kind of discouraging, but you never know what another year of strength and conditioning could do.
In any case, put KCP out there with Charles Mann, Kenny Gaines, and Brandon Morris, then see what Parker, Frazier and Kessler can do in a support role.
Although I think Kentavious will not be back in Athens, my sense is that Mark Fox will. His record over 4 seasons is not good. He is now 65 and 63 overall, which is 50 percent. He's just 43 percent in SEC competition, and has managed a losing record in 3 out of 4 years. I've said it before, but if a coach is judged on wins and losses, Fox is doing about the same job that Felton did before he was dismissed.
Ultimately, I think McGarity likes Fox and wants to give him at least another year to see what he can do.
Extremely disappointed with this season, especially Fox and his substitution patterns. LSU coach Johnny Jones decided to go small with his line-up, and they were tearing us up. Wish Mark Fox had done the same. Water under the bridge, at any rate.
Let's support the Dawgs and see if we can come back better next year.

Leslie's Mom Receives First Call
No surprise there. Still a nice story about an NBA player and his mother.

I liked the big smile on Leslie and the quote that his Mom was beyond happy, screaming and very excited about the news that Travis was going to get another shot at the NBA. Chris Daniels to Indonesia
Chris Daniels is now playing in Jakarta, Indonesia, with the Indonesia Warriors (sometimes called by the team's former name, Satria Muda) of the ASEAN Basketball League.
Jakarta is the capital city of Indonesia, with a population of over 10 million residents. ASEAN is the association of southeast nations, a group of ten countries in southeast Asia. Besides Indonesia, ASEAN includes the countries of Singapore, Thailand, the Phillipines and Vietnam, to name a few.
Daniels lines up next to a familiar face on Indonesia's front line. Former UGA hoops teammate Steve Thomas starts for the Warriors at center.

Chris went right to work for the Warriors. He is averaging 14 points per game through 9 contests.

Mike Mercer to Australia
Mike Mercer has landed in Australia. He's been signed by the Geelong Supercats of the Australian Basketball Association.
Mercer's new home, Geelong, is located about 50 miles southwest of Melbourne. Geelong is the second-largest city in the state of Victoria, lying at the southern tip of Australia just across from the island of Tasmania. The nick-name "Supercat" comes from the large aluminum-hulled catamaran ships produced in the region.
Good to see that Mercer is married (wife Adreana) and has a son (MJ).
Ironically, Mike is now playing close to Melbourne, the home of his old roommate, Kevin Brophy, who passed away in a tragic car accident almost seven years ago. Dawgs hoops players Steven Newman and Terrance Woodbury also played in Australia.

Mike was brought in by the Supercats after their existing two-guard, Kimmani Barrett (formerly of Lasalle University), went down with a knee injury. Where is the UGA Basketball Program Headed?
I thought I understood during the Felton years. Seemed like we were building something. We weren't great, mind you, but considering the trash dump of the NCAA investigation and the self-imposed sanctions, at some point during Felton's tenure I was starting to feel good about the program again.
Over his five full seasons, Felton's SEC win loss record was
7 and 9
2 and 14
5 and 11
8 and 8
4 and 12, not counting four wins in SEC Tournament championship run
That next year, Felton was fired after going 9 and 11 overall and 0 and 5 in the SEC. Felton won a total of 26 regular season SEC games. He lost 61. Felton got us to the NCAA's and Dawg fans enjoyed winning the SEC Tournament. Considering what he had to start with, Felton performed admirably, but a 30 percent record in the SEC is not good enough.
Mark Fox came in and his teams went
5 and 11
9 and 7
5 and 11
0 and 3
Of course there's still a lot of basketball to be played this year. But if Fox could somehow match Felton's last full year mark of 4 and 12, that would be a huge accomplishment. I seriously doubt that even if we win 4 games, we would follow that up by winning the SEC Tournament.
Recruiting:
Felton hit the ground with tough issues to face. Coach Harrick could get guys committed, but getting them into school was another matter (ex., Julius Lamptey, Larry Turner, Alexander Johnson, etc.). In his last class, Harrick had a marginal class of signees, all of whom asked to be released when the NCAA investigation hit, and none of whom did anything much in college basketball.
Therefore, when Harrick was fired, Felton had seniors, but no freshmen and just a couple of scholarship sophomores and juniors. Battling scholarship limitations and the clould of NCAA sanctions, Felton beat the bushes, brought in some low-ranked guys and took a chance on some others.
Over time Felton was able to generate some recruiting momentum. Starting with Levi Stukes and Steve Newman, Felton started to hit his stride by bringing in Sundiata Gaines and Dave Bliss. Things got better from there. UGA basketball had some really important misses, too. 5-star recruit Lou Williams went to the NBA instead of suiting up for the Dawgs (a huge, huge loss). Felton rebounded by replacing Williams with Billy Humphrey, a talented shooter, but he had no stand-in when Derrick Favors decided to go to Tech instead of UGA.
By and large, however, Felton brought in some pretty good players-- guards like Sundiata Gaines, Levi Stukes, Mike Mercer, Billy Humphrey, Ricky McPhee, Dustin Ware and Travis Leslie. We got an even better haul of big men: Trey Thompkins, Jeremy Price, Dave Bliss, Takais Brown, Chris Barnes, Ajax.

Felton got the team to perform in his first year, going 16 and 14 overall, 7 and 9 in the SEC, and making the NIT. The second year, in which Felton had just seven scholarship players, the overall record was 8 and 20. Note: There was a significant drop-off in year two, the year when a new coach generally lives and dies with his predecessor's players.
Thereafter, however, performance was trending up. The team went from the SEC basement to the top of the SEC tourney field, from NCAA sanctions to the NCAA Tournament. Felton couldn't sustain it, however, and he was fired mid-season. My point is that although we weren't ever great in basketball, we were respectable and reasonably competitive. In five full years under Felton we went to three post-season tournaments (two NIT's and one NCAA).
Comparison to 2013
We're definitely not trending up.
Recruiting
Recruiting is in trouble, in my opinion. I look up and down the roster and wonder, where's the beef? There's no low post scorer. I thought Donte Williams was going to have a great year, but now that he has been slow out of the gate, we don't have anyone who can finish reliably. Nobody with a big butt and good hands. No Trey Thompkins, no Jeremy Price, no Chris Barnes. Not even a troubled but talented guy like Takais Brown.
Hate to say this, but we don't have makers on the perimeter either. A Ricky McPhee, Levi Stukes or Billy Humphrey sure would make a huge difference to this team. KCP is a great all-around player and Vincent Williams had a nice game against Missouri. Maybe the guys coming in next year will help, but it's the combination that we lack. We need a low post guy who can score and a consistent three-point threat when defenses collapse.

Fox has an overall winning percentage in the SEC of 37 percent. The high-point for Fox was in year two, in which he had the benefit of Felton's recruits. Now that Fox is in year four with a roster full of his own players, we are definitely struggling. It's hard for me to watch a game and see us barely show up at Florida, and end up losing by 33 points. Our pre-conference record included defeats at home to teams I had hardly ever heard of.
Even counting the extremely challenged 2004/05 team, Felton went 22 and 42 in the SEC in his first four years. Fox will have to go 3 and 10 in the SEC from this point forward just to match Felton's record. Fox can do it, but if your current coach can hardly match the record of the last coach who was fired, that's a bad sign. Especially so when the current coach makes over twice the salary of the last guy.
Where are we headed? I hope Tony Parker comes to town, or we get a big-time JUCO low post scorer somehow for next year. Otherwise, looks like given our downward trajectory, a change is in the wind. 30 percent wasn't good enough in 2009 and it's certainly not good enough now.

Memory Lane (Georgia vs. Kentucky, 2009)
Great article on when Georgia beat Kentucky at Rupp. Terrance Woodbury played out of his mind to lead the Dawgs to victory. You have to think that the Dawgs' win in 2009 was the echo from the worst to first Dennis Felton SEC Tournament miracle in Atlanta.

It will probably take similar divine intervention for the Dawgs to come away with a victory in 2012. Kentucky and Anthony Davis are playing championship-style basketball. They defend, rebound, block shots and score effectively. They don't have a John Wall, but they don't need one.
I hope that Coach Fox takes a page from Coach Herrmann and convinces his guys to drive to the basket. The only way to beat Kentucky is to beat them down the floor. If we do that and get some momentum, the threes will start to fall. Then who knows what will happen?

Dustin Ware, Point Guard in Life
Great, great article from the AJC.
Dustin Ware came to UGA at least in part to fill the legacy of his half-brother, Stacy Ware. Stacy was a student at UGA who died of meningitis the week that his new half-brother, Dustin, was born.
I am so proud of how Dustin is doing. I still want him to drive the ball every now and then, but the team does not function nearly as well when he's not out there. He pushed the ball time and time again against MSU and it led to easy buckets for the Dawgs.
Dustin's a great kid.

Zac Swansey Interview

Quite the Irony
Or so it seems to me.
The New Jersey Nets have recently announced that former UGA coach Dennis Felton will be on the team's coaching staff for the summer league. Part of Coach Felton's duties will be to prepare the Nets' top draftee Derrick Favors for the rigors of the NBA.
So, Felton will get to coach Favors after all.
Felton's failure to attract Favors to Athens was the deciding factor that led to the coaching change in Athens (Who knows? Perhaps if Tech under-performs this year, Hewitt's failure to keep Favors in Atlanta could lead to a change in Atlanta).

The New Jersey Nets have recently announced that former UGA coach Dennis Felton will be on the team's coaching staff for the summer league. Part of Coach Felton's duties will be to prepare the Nets' top draftee Derrick Favors for the rigors of the NBA.
So, Felton will get to coach Favors after all.
Felton's failure to attract Favors to Athens was the deciding factor that led to the coaching change in Athens (Who knows? Perhaps if Tech under-performs this year, Hewitt's failure to keep Favors in Atlanta could lead to a change in Atlanta).

CBI or CIT
Good analysis by the AJC. Sure, it would be a disappointment to the team to go to one of the lesser tournaments, but you have to earn your way to the Big Dance. It's a talent contest, not a swimsuit competition.
Georgia has some noteable wins, and some near misses. We look pretty at times, but the fact remains that we're still well short of .500 for the year.
My opinion is that if the team gets to keep playing, you have to accept whatever invitation comes your way. In the meantime, I think it is right to keep the team focused on Arkansas tomorrow night. We win that game and the pressure is on everybody else but us.

Dennis Felton and Mike Mercer, Together Again
Well, sort of.
Dennis Felton has been working as a color commentator for ESPN. He'll be part of ESPN360's crew for the Rutgers vs. South Florida game, to be played on Saturday, January 16.
I'm sure it will be awkward for Felton to handle a game in which Mike Mercer is playing, but I'm sure he wishes Mercer well. And as a professional, I don't think he will display any bias, even though he might like to see Mercer do well and lead South Florida to victory.

Dennis Felton Speaks to Problems in Men's Basketball

As I've said before, Felton didn't win nearly enough to suit me. He admittedly came into a very difficult situation. In fairness, Felton did recruit Sundiata Gaines, Dave Bliss and Terrance Woodbury, who became the keys to UGA's SEC Tournament championship.
I think that Felton's biggest contribution, however, may have been managing to get through the NCAA problems that he inherited. Felton stuck to his principles, and never took short-cuts. UGA quietly exited NCAA probation a couple of years ago.
Now that the program is on a stable footing, with quality student-athletes like Trey Thompkins, Travis Leslie, Dustin Ware, Jeremy Price and Chris Barnes, it will be up to Coach Fox to mold Felton's recruits, instill a really good offensive system, and bring in the best recruits in Georgia. Hopefully, UGA will soon have a high class and a winning basketball program.
At any rate, it was likely his past experience with NCAA issues that made Coach Felton an attractive panelist for PSU.
By the way, is it just me, or does it look to you like Coach Felton has lost a good bit of weight?

Dawgs Learning Triangle Offense
Good to have an article on the progress of the team.
As much as I appreciated Dennis Felton for making sure we stayed out of NCAA trouble, stressing academics and winning the SEC East Tournament Championship, I believe the article is right in indicating we could have gone even farther with different offensive sets.
Fox has a complex system, and if the team can get it down, we may sneak up on a few people. I'm eager to see the product on the floor.

Desmond Oliver to Canisius
Former UGA assistant basketball coach Desmond Oliver will begin his new coaching duties on July 1. He was let go when current head coach Mark Fox was hired to replace Dennis Felton.
Oliver was hired on by Canisius, which gives Oliver a chance to continue his coaching career in his home town.

Damien Wilkins Finishes
Guys that can drive the lane and dunk are said to "be able to finish with authority."
Well, as Damien Wilkins has so eloquently said in the recent DawgPost article, life is more than sports. And in so many areas, completing what you started, following through, staying with it, is the most critical component to success.
I'm proud of Damien for finishing with authority. He competed in athletics and he completed his coursework. He has established a nice career in the NBA and he has prepared himself for life after basketball ends. A lot of players never finish. They never get their degrees. Damien committed the time and effort to secure his.

Former UGA basketball coach Dennis Felton has decided not to accept a job to coach in Nigeria.
Coach Felton is apparently looking for something state-side, so the timing wasn't right for him and his family.

Interesting article. I don't know what the salaries are in Nigeria, and I have no idea how Felton would manage the impact on his family, but it looks like he will have his newest coaching gig overseas.
