Hoops Getting Started

Dawgs play exhibition game tonight against Young Harris. Pete Herrmann has those guys playing good basketball, but I expect it to be an easy win for Georgia.

The Red and Black article below talks about Coach Fox experimenting with different line-ups. I expect early in the year he will go with upper-classmen as his starters, which would be Donte Williams at center, Nemi Djurisic at power forward, Marcus Thornton at small forward, KCP at the two-guard, and Vincent Williams at the point.

Either way, the change of pace second team would be a good one, with Charles Mann, Kenny Gaines, Brandon Morris, Florveus and John Cannon.

The game will be broadcast live at 7:00 p.m. on georgiadogs.com. Admission to the game is free.

Memory Lane (Georgia vs. Kentucky, 2009)

Great article on when Georgia beat Kentucky at Rupp. Terrance Woodbury played out of his mind to lead the Dawgs to victory. You have to think that the Dawgs' win in 2009 was the echo from the worst to first Dennis Felton SEC Tournament miracle in Atlanta.

Dawgs Over Cats

It will probably take similar divine intervention for the Dawgs to come away with a victory in 2012. Kentucky and Anthony Davis are playing championship-style basketball. They defend, rebound, block shots and score effectively. They don't have a John Wall, but they don't need one.

I hope that Coach Fox takes a page from Coach Herrmann and convinces his guys to drive to the basket. The only way to beat Kentucky is to beat them down the floor. If we do that and get some momentum, the threes will start to fall. Then who knows what will happen?

Evaluating Howard Thompkins

Draft Express does a pretty thorough job of evaluating Howard Thompkins and other members of this season's freshman class.

Pete Herrmann once compared Thompkins to Tracy McGrady, and stated how much the whole coaching staff was looking forward to getting Thompkins out on the court.

I felt that the comparison was off, due to the fact that since coming into the League, McGrady distinguished himself by his athleticism. Perhaps diminishing some these days, but the fact remains that McGrady is still considered an above the rim player.

Thompkins, on the other hand, from what I could tell in his high school games, was not a slasher/high-flying dunker, but more of a solid, fundamentals guy. Solid, but definitely below the rim.

To be fair, Herrmann also likened Thompkins to Tim Duncan. And I thought then and still think now, that that's a much more apt comparison.

The good news is that while McGrady went straight to the NBA and Duncan went to Wake Forest. Thompkins is suited up in the red and black.

The point for mentioning the above comparisons is that I think Draft Express is "spot on" in assessing the things that Thompkins needs to work on to improve his game. If he gets more lift off the floor, works on his conditioning, and hits the weights in the off-season, Dawg fans should have many more exciting games ahead.

Interview with Georgia Associate Coach, Pete Herrmann

Thanks to David Hale for posting this interview on his blog.

Athens Sports Radio, "960, The Ref," did a good job in discussing several topics with Coach Herrmann. Herrmann talks about the injury situation with Albert Jackson and Trey Thompkins, the upcoming game with South Carolina Upstate, and other basketball-related topics.
