Way to go, Dawgs! Fantastic way to close out the season.
Congratulations to Coach Richt and the entire staff. Terrific send-off for the seniors. Good group of guys. Cox, Moore, Atkins, Owens, Weston and the whole crew.
We couldn't seem to get anything going in the first half, but Brandon Boykin ran a kick-off back, and the Dawgs turned up the heat on defense. Converted a 14 to 14 tie into a rout, for the most part.
Dawgs win, 44 to 20.

Battle of the Bands Prepares Fans for Bowl
It's the Dawgs vs. the Aggies this afternoon. Should be a great game.
I don't know if there will be a Dawg Walk before the contest, but the UGA band has already been gearing up for the game.
Predicting a Georgia win. I don't know how it will happen. We have no defensive coordinator. There has been a ton of upheaval in the program. We're playing a lot closer to their place than to Athens.
When you're in hostile territory, you stick to basics. Georgia should establish the run and keep after them with Caleb King and Washaun Ealey. Take the crowd out of the game and keep their fast-paced offense on the sidelines.
Dawgs tough it out, 35 to 24.

Joe Cox Looks Back, Looks Forward
He's a great Dawg. Didn't have the best results, but the guy is a battler. Who knows what would have happened if he had a sophomore season in which to get better.
To have your first year as a starter be your last year on the team is tough. He handled it fairly well, given the circumstances.
I really do think that Cox will be a success, whether in coaching or in other pursuits.

Dawgs Win!
Another UGA vs. Auburn game. Another contest that went down to the wire. Georgia escaped with a 7 point victory, 31 to 24.
Auburn went up two touchdowns on passing plays. Their guys looked wide open and things did not look good.
Georgia responded. The team showed the same never-die resolve that it had early in the season when Georgia seemed to always come back in the game after allowing the opponent to first get ahead.
UGA mounted a furious comeback. Somehow, Georgia got Joe Cox going throwing the ball, shifted the running game into gear, and scored with our special teams. When was the last time that happened?
Cox was accurate on a couple of throws. He hit Israel Troupe and Tavarres King for long passing strikes. He was even lucky on one play, when a ball thrown over the middle, without much zip, and almost a sure interception, went right through an Auburn defender's hands and ricocheted to Orson Charles.
In good news for Georgia's ground game, the offensive line started to open up holes. Washaun Ealey showed incredible balance and drive on a spinning whirling dervish play down to the one. He managed to squeeze into the endzone on his next run. Caleb King got into the act and scored on a short touchdown run.
After Georgia managed to get the lead, Auburn came right back with a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Georgia received the ball, but was not able to move the football effectively.
Auburn tried to pass the ball down the field, and UGA came up with a play. Our front four collapsed the pocket, and the Auburn quarterback made an off-balance throw. Reshad Jones pulled in the interception, and Caleb King made them pay with a 20-yard+ touchdown run.
Auburn still had a chance to tie it. They ran the ball down the field this time and moved it effectively. Time was getting away from them, however, and Auburn was forced to throw it. On the play of the game, Auburn's quarterback hit an Auburn player in stride at Georgia's two yard line. Bacarri Rambo hit the Auburn player in stride, too. The jarring hit separated their player from the ball, and what would have probably been a touchdown for Georgia, ended up as an incompletion.
After the hit, Rambo collapsed in a heap. His right arm seemed stuck straight up in the air. Instant replays showed the violent collision, and players for both sides stopped to kneel in prayer.
I'm not sure what the status of Rambo is. I immediately thought that he had broken his collarbone, but then that didn't seem right either. I did know that his shoulder and neck received an incredible blow. There are sure to be updates, which I will link for the sake of the record.
After Rambo's injury, Auburn seemed out of sorts. Georgia recorded a sack. One of their linemen jumped and they were moved back 5 yards with a false start penalty. And on the next-to-last play, Auburn threw for the endzone.
Great-looking pass. In the far corner of the endzone. Very close, very accurate, and I wasn't sure right away what had happened. But somehow our players knocked the ball away.

Very Strange Game
Well, I said I had a bad feeling about this game, and the feeling never left me. Georgia looked flat, dazed, out of sorts. Lose to LSU 20 to 13.
LSU was ranked #4, so the Georgia squad has nothing to feel ashamed about. But the team really doesn't have much to feel good about, either.
For one thing, the Dawgs had nothing going on offense for the entire first half. Nothing new from Mike Bobo. Three and outs for the team on multiple occasions. Cox missed a sure touchdown pass to AJ Green.
Georgia's ineptitude on offense meant that we therefore gave the ball to LSU in prime field position. Drew Butler kept up his booming punts, but the LSU special teams players were able to repeatedly return the ball for 10 yards plus.
The much criticized Willie Martinez and the Georgia defense got pushed around on two long drives, yet they held LSU to 6 points. Blair Walsh missed his first field goal of the year. Terrible timing.
Second half begins and Georgia sacks the LSU quarterback on three straight plays. The Dawgs go up by 7. All the while, though, Joe Cox is having his worst game. Missing wide open guys. Throwing behind receivers. Manages to get his completion percentage up in the second half, but he never looked good.
Two minutes, 47 seconds to go, Georgia gets the ball and drives down the field. AJ makes another incredible catch. And then the call of the game. Excessive celebration on the Dawgs. Penalty of 15 yards. LSU gets the kick and before you know it they are down at Georgia's 30.
LSU runs for a touchdown, and Joe Cox throws an interception. Game over.
If there was a good development for Georgia, it's that the team discovered its "go-to" tailback. Washaun Ealey looked great. Much better than Caleb King or Richard Samuel. If I'm Coach Richt, I practice Ealey with the first team all week.
Strange feeling. Strange game. Hate that Georgia lost. Hate that we lost the way we did. As long as there is no taunting, there is no way that the referee should call excessive celebration on a guy who catches a critical touchdown pass with less than 2 minutes to go.
The SEC needs to step in.

Ugly Game
But I'll take it.
Georgia was very lucky to win that game. Rainy weather. Sloppy play.
Georgia had two critical interceptions, including a pick 6. Joe Cox was not on his game. He made a couple of throws when he had to, but after last week, I was expecting a much better performance.
Caleb King fumbled deep in our own territory. Don't know who else we have at tailback who knows the plays and will hang onto the ball.
By and large, the running game looked very lethargic. Anyone know why our offensive line isn't moving people off the ball? We got stuffed on some short yardage situations that our O-line should win.
Can't blame the Dawgs' poor performance on Martinez. The defense was given poor field position yet again, and the Dawgs manned up. Martinez was helped by the rainy weather, since Arizona State dropped some passes. Seems like Justin Houston is getting back in game shape.
If we're going to blitz, we'd better get somewhere with it. Seems like we're telegraphing too much. There's something to be said for getting in the quarterback's head by showing blitz, but you want to confuse the offense, too. Show blitz and back off. Surprise the qb by bringing someone off the corner.
A.J. Green saves us. Blocked kick, clutch catches. Touchdown reception. Should have been credited for two t.d.'s.
This is the kind of game that good teams have to get through. Play poorly, overcome the elements, and somehow find a way to win.

Did We Red-Shirt the Wrong Guy?
I wondered more than once over the last few years whether Mark Richt made the right decision. Richt said in essence that he had made a mistake by red-shirting Knowshon Moreno.
The bigger question is whether Mark Richt made a similar mistake in red-shirting Joe Cox, and making him the second-string qb instead of Matthew Stafford.
When Cox came in to save Georgia's bacon against Colorado, I remember thinking what a great touch he had throwing the pass over the middle. No doubt, Stafford gave us some great moments, but in retrospect, Cox might be the more talented quarterback.
I know it's early yet, and Cox has had just two really good games, but I'm curious about everyone else's opinion. What do you think?

Great, great game.
Georgia defeats Arkansas 52 to 41. If Munson had called the game, he surely woulda keeled over, and me with him.
Georgia had fumbles, near fumbles, an interception, false start penalties, and all manner of break-downs on defense. We gave them the ball deep in our territory. We started the game in a hole. I doubted UGA could rally and catch up for the second straight week.
But somehow Georgia did it. Joe Cox threw 5 touchdown passes. Amazing.
Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett, who had been fantastic in the first half and into the second, somehow lost the mojo on the last couple of possessions. We had just enough to get out in front of those guys and hang on for dear life.

I Wonder...
Richard Samuel: Could it be that he didn't get the ball much after his touchdown because he was hurt? The South Carolina guy pretty much put a rear naked choke on Samuel as he plunged into the endzone. He had no chance of stopping Samuel, yet he tried to stop him by grabbing Samuel around the neck and pulling back.
Tavarres King: Is he the next big thing at wide receiver?
A.J. Green: What shape would UGA be in if Green had signed with the in-state Gamecocks instead of the Dawgs?
Branden Smith: Who was responsible for keeping him in the game, instead of pulling him after his fumble on the kick-off return?
Carlton Thomas: Will the crucial fumble recovery in the South Carolina game be just the spark that Thomas needs to overcome his own fumble in the Oklahoma State game?
Joe Cox: How sick has he been? He didn't look at all well. Could it be that the guy will be an absolute show-stopper after he gets healthy?

Game Recap, Including Ceremony to Honor Thompkins and Houts
The Augusta Chronicle tried its best to recap the Georgia-South Carolina game. The contest had so many twists and turns that summaries don't do it justice.
I decided to include the recap on the Blog, since the paper described the recognition given to Trey Thompkins and Ashley Houts, and their coaches, Mark Fox and Andy Landers. As readers know, Thompkins and Houts led Team USA men's and women's teams to the gold medal in the FIBA Under 19 games.

Woo-Hoo! Dawgs win!
Huge game for us. I predicted a loss. So glad I was wrong.
Weird game. Almost exactly 4 hours long.
Long kick-off returns. Bone-headed plays. Redemption for Joe Cox, Ty Frix and Branden Smith.
Huge plays for Georgia. Crawling, scrambling fumble recovery by Carlton Thomas. PAT block by Deangelo Tyson. Game-saving deflection by Rennie Curran.
I like our team a whole lot. Plenty to still worry about, but I'll leave that for another day.

How healthy is Joe Cox? Is he really up for starting the game and setting the tone for the team? Can he connect on a deep route? If Joe can't throw well, can a back-up do the job? Which one? How quickly can and will the coaches assess the situation and make a change, if needed? Are we sandbagging?
How will we run the ball on South Carolina? Who is our go-to guy? Is Caleb King available? What about Ealey? Is our offensive line "man enough?" Will we show creativity on offense? Do we have receivers other than Green and Moore, who can reasonably be expected to make plays?
How can we record a sack? What is our defensive end rotation? Will we get a turnover? Can we disguise coverages? Will our corners and safeties play big?
Will our defense see too much of the field and get tired? Will the Ol' Ball Coach dial up one of those red zone high passes to the back of the end zone and have one of their guys jump up and get it?
Will we use directional kicking? Can we cover kicks and punts? Do we know when to run it out and when to down it?
Will our coaches communicate well? Is the team mentally and physically prepared for its first home game of the year? How well will we play at night?

'Bout as I Expected
I guess I was right to be worried. I couldn't bring myself to call it for Oklahoma State on my own Blog, but I was actually anticipating a loss.

Wapo on UGA
The Washington Post has UGA tabbed at the #14 spot of its "Top 25."
They think that UGA's opener against OSU is the key game for the year. They're probably right. If Georgia shows that it can run with power, that the offensive and defensive lines are stout, we should be in decent shape. Get blown out by Oklahoma State and it will be a long year.
