KCP for Heisman!

Complete game for the Dawgs in the win over Texas A&M.  Wow, it sure does feel good to get the W.

Congrats, too, to Coach Fox.  He mixed in a little press, gave Kenny Gaines a few more minutes, and kept his guys from letting the game get away late in the second half.

I'm not a Larry Conley fan.  Not by a long stretch.  But he was right on target in his commentary that Kentavious is probably more valuable to his team than any other player in the SEC.  We might have won a couple of games this season without KCP, but just a couple.  Kentavious plays great defense, gets the team out on the break, rebounds the ball and this year has really increased his shooting percentage.

I can't think of any shooting guard that Georgia has ever had that brings more to the table than KCP.  Kentavious is averaging 17 points and 6 boards a game and shooting a respectable 42 percent from the field.  He also gets 2 assists and 2.5 steals per game.

In the last ten years we've had designated three-point shooters like Ricky McPhee who also did pretty well on the defensive end.  Gerald Robinson could drive on anybody, but he was more of a second point guard.  Corey Butler played some at the two-guard, but he was a defensive ace, rather than a scorer.  Billy Humphrey could shoot, but he had hobbled wheels for a portion of his career, and I don't remember him rebounding the ball much.

Levi Stukes was a shooting guard in a point guard's body.  Ezra Williams could shoot, but he didn't have much of a mid-range game.  Jarvis Hayes was more of a small forward.  D.A. Layne could score, but see my description of Levi Stukes above.

You'd have to go back to the era of Shandon and Willie Anderson to find Georgia's last big athletic two-guards, guys who could score, defend and rebound.  But even then, the Anderson brothers were more scorers than shooters.  If Kentavious is not the best ever UGA two-guard, then he's close.  If basketball had a Heisman, KCP would get my vote.

Freddie In, Ezra Out

Fred Gibson is on the roster for the Austin Toros of the NBA's D-League this year. He played almost all of last year with the Albuquerque Thunderbirds, but joined the Toros very late in last year's season, and did not score any points.

Followers of the Blog will remember that Ezra Williams played for the Austin Toros for more than one year. Williams is not listed as a returning player for the 2009/2010 season.

Can't say I like the Fashion Statement...

but Ezra Williams is still playing with the Toros. He's even getting after it a little on his perimeter defense.

Williams is averaging 11 points and 4 rebounds per game this year. Always a long-range threat, Ezra is shooting 43% from behind the arc, which might attract the attention of a couple of NBA squads. Of course, most NBA 2-guards have to do a lot more than shoot 3's, so the right situation for Williams would be a team with a dominant post presence, perhaps the Orlando Magic.

Williams has had a pretty long career. We'll see if he'll ever get his shot at the next level.

Fred vs. Ezra

Fred Gibson's Albuquerque Thunderbirds squared off Saturday night against Ezra Williams' Austin Toro's, and it turned out to be another great game.

Ezra Williams played more minutes and won the statistical battle. He had 11 points and 4 rebounds in 25 minutes. Fred Gibson played 15 minutes and scored 6 points with 2 rebounds.

Ezra won where it really counted, as the Toro's edged the Thunderbirds in overtime, 125 to 121.

Ezra Williams Gets Double-Double

Ezra Williams had an off-night shooting last night, but he made up for it by contributing in other categories in the Austin Toros' overtime win over the Colorado 14'ers.

Williams played 37 minutes and responded with 13 points, 11 rebounds, and 4 assists. He even added 2 blocked shots, for good measure.

Mohamed Abukar, former UGA signee, scored 18 points on 6 of 10 shooting.

Toros over the Flash

Ezra Williams and the Austin Toros played Steve Newman and the Utah Flash.

The Toros came out on top, 97 to 88. Ezra Williams had a really nice game, with 19 points on 7 of 15 shooting. His teammate, and former UGA recruit, Mohamed Abukar, went 2 of 4 from the floor.

Steve Newman scored 4 points with 7 rebounds for the Flash.

The Toros have now won 9 straight.

D-League Update

Fred Gibson and the Albuquerque Thunderbirds are 2 and 9. Fred is coming off the bench and is making contributions where he can.

Steve Newman's scoring has gone down. He didn't score any points in his last game, and in the game today, has not scored yet.

Ezra Williams is playing the best out of the three. He did a little bit of everything in his last game-- he had a few rebounds, assists, and points. His team, the Austtin Toros has won 8 straight.

Fred Gibson and Ezra Williams Battle Again

Similar result. The Austin Toros defeated the Albuquerque Thunderbirds again last night by a score of 127 to 121. This time, the game had the added drama of overtime.

Fred went 3 for 3 from the floor for the Thunderbirds. He also had a steal and a rebound. No turnovers in 16 minutes. That's a pretty good game.

Ezra scored 9 points. He was 2 of 6 in shooting, but was able to offset an off night from the floor by getting to the line. He was 4 of 5 from the charity stripe.

Austin improved to 6 and 3. Albuquerque is 1 and 7.

Ezra Williams plays a Complete Game

Ezra Williams had his most impressive game of the year for his team, the Austin Toros.

Unfortunately, it was at the expense of Fred Gibson and the Albuquerque Thunderbirds.

Williams came off the bench and really contributed. He shot 7 of 10 from the field, and 2 of 3 from behind the arc. He did not shoot any free throws, which indicates that Williams is still relying mostly on his "spot up and shoot" game, rather than taking it to the basket.

At any rate, Ezra also had 3 assists and a rebound before fouling out of the contest. Williams is averaging 8 points and 2 boards per game.

Ezra Williams Playing Consistent Ball

As I posted a couple of weeks ago, Ezra Williams is playing for the Austin Toros of the NBA D-League.

Williams is averaging a respectable 7 points and 2 rebounds in right at 18 minutes per game. He has yet to miss from the free throw line. He also has 1 assist per game, which I figure is about right for him.

Williams did not play in the Toros' last game, a win over the Sioux Falls SkyForce. Not sure if he was injured or not. The Toros won rather convincingly, by a score of 117 to 91.

Since Austin is affiliated with the San Antonio Spurs, maybe Williams will be considered by management if the Spurs need a scorer from behind the arc.

Ezra Williams contributes

The Austin Toro's lost to the Colorado 14er's, 120 to 104.

Ezra Williams came in off the bench and scored 14 points in a losing effort for the Toro's. The difference in the game was the fact that the Toro's had 30 turnovers.

In other news from the Toro's, former UGA recruit, Mohamed Abukar, was waived by the team due to injury.

Ezra Williams

starts the pre-season schedule for the NBA D-League's Austin Toros.

Williams came in off the bench for the Toros and scored 5 points on 2 of 4 shooting. Ezra also garnered 2 rebounds.

The Toros lost the game to the Rio Grande Vipers, by a score of 77 to 70.

Ezra Williams to play for Toros

Former UGA standout, Ezra Williams, was selected last week in the NBA D-League draft.

Williams went to the Austin Toros, of Austin, Texas. Williams previously played with the Toros in 2005/2006, a season in which he averaged 12.5 points per game.

The Toros also selected Mohamed Abukar. Dawg fans may remember that Abukar originally signed with Jim Harrick's UGA squad, but was given a release after Harrick resigned. Abukar then went to the University of Florida, and ultimately transferred again to San Diego State.

The Toros are affiliated with the NBA's San Antonio Spurs team. Austin's games will be broadcast by the local ESPN station.

Perhaps Williams will be picked up by San Antonio, or another team that needs a three-point specialist. I could see him playing well for Phoenix, since teams will likely need to double-team Shaquille O'Neal or Amare Stoudemire, which would leave things open on the perimeter for a reliable shooter.

Congratulations, Ezra!
