Lalanne and UMass

Something about this situation doesn't sit well with me. Not quite sure what it is.

At any rate, if I were Lalanne, I'd pass. Western Massachusetts is a long way from Florida, and tuition is probably off the charts for an out of state student.

He should accept a scholarship to go Juco and see what happens.

Keep an Eye on Murphy

I thought that when Coach Fox was out scouting Dwayne Polee that he also should have checked out Reggie Murphy.

Murphy was the key to several important victories for Westchester High. While Polee had 20 points and 10 rebounds in the California state championsip game, Polee's coach felt that the story of the game was Reggie Murphy. His presence in the paint led Mater Dei to attempt lots of outside shots. Westchester took the long rebounds and converted on the other end. Murphy finished the contest with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Although he fouled out of Westchester's game against Oak Hill, Murphy picked up MVP honors for his 12 points and 8 boards.

Murphy signed to go to to junior college at Casper College. Since Jeremy Price and Chris Barnes will be graduating and UGA lost signee Cady Lalanne to eligibility issues, we will need a lot of help in the post for 2011. I say we should watch Murphy's development with a keen eye.

Cady Lalanne Not Admitted

Very awkward.

I don't know how this happened at this point on the calendar.., but here we are. I thought that Lalanne might need a redshirt anyway, but if he didn't get in on this go round, then there's hardly any chance that he will ever see UGA's campus.

Is there still a player out there who wants a schollie for 2010? There aren't any more Marcus Thornton late decommitting guys, are there?

I guess 2011 will have plenty of recruiting room for Fox, but he will need to get some guys who are ready to play.

Cady Lalanne Receives Honor

Lalanne was named 4A Player of the Year. Lalanne averaged 21 points and 13 rebounds, while shooting 56 percent from the floor. He led his team to a 24 and 9 record and the state championship game.

Cady will be 1 of 6 players competing for the Mr. Florida Basketball for 2009/2010 (I expect that that award will go to Brandon Knight).

What about Polee and Williams?

Fox has two scholarships that he can give out this spring. Anonymous mentioned that he thinks that UGA will bring in Dwayne Polee and Donte Williams.

Dwayne Polee and anybody sounds good to me. I have been really impressed with him so far, and it would be a real coup for Fox to go out to the west coast and steal him from the PAC-10.

A signing class of Lalanne, Williams and Polee would help our roster to shape up, too. The best news is that we would have 5 quality big guys. You almost have to have that number, since we don't have a true center. Williams and Lalanne, the new guys would help to shoot and defend. Jeremy Price and Chris Barnes would give us the bulk and experience in the SEC. Trey Thompkins, if he comes back, would rebound and score.

Price and Barnes will be seniors. Lalanne and Williams would need to prepare to play right away so they can get enough experience to be the key guys in the post for the future. Of course, one of the side benefits from signing Williams is that it might put UGA in a good position for snagging Tony Parker down the line.

Dwayne Polee and Travis Leslie would hold down the three spot, along with whatever Drazen Zlovaric can give us. UGA's high fliers would keep us on Sports Center, that's for sure. We would have an exciting brand of basketball.

My biggest concern would be on the perimeter. Dustin Ware can bring the ball up the floor, with an assist from Vincent Williams. Gerald Robinson, Ebuka Anyaorah and Demario Mayfield would be the key contributors at the two-guard. Can any of them score enough to give us fire-power against a zone? I think that if Robinson is as good as advertised, we might be okay offensively. The bigger question is whether our two-guards can defend the bigger shooting guards in the league.

Cady Lalanne Leads Oak Ridge

Lalanne was the difference in Oak Ridge's Class 4A Region II final on Saturday against Nature Coast. Cady finished with 20 points, 16 rebounds and 2 blocks. Lalanne scored 9 of Oak Ridge's 12 points in the fourth quarter.

Nature Coast brought a good-sized front line to Orlando, part of a team that had gone 27 and 4 on the year. Lalanne's performance bodes well for Georgia as Cady gets prepared for college ball.

With the victory, Oak Ridge moves on to the final four of the state tournament.

Lalanne has averaged 21 points, 15 rebounds and 5 blocks per contest this year.

Kentavious Caldwell Goes Off

Went for 41 points against Upson. Hit 7 three-pointers.

Caldwell is the kind of shooter that UGA needs. Looking at our current roster, Ricky McPhee will be graduating this year. We have Gerald Robinson who will be eligible next season, but I'm not sure if he can score it consistently from deep.

It would be great to bring in a shooter for 2010, and then Caldwell in 2011. A class of Julian Royal, Dai-Jon Parker and Caldwell would show that Fox can lock down the borders and start to pick up the best players in state. We have to get a center type, too, so a lot will be riding on whether Cady Lalanne shows he can rebound and defend.

Cady Lalanne Ready to Help the Dawgs

If Lalanne has bulked up and improved on his defense, he would be a nice complement to the Dawgs' arsenal. He is a big, athletic, and scores the ball well enough to help out.

Lalanne Leads Oak Ridge Again

Cady scored 18 points on 7 of 13 shooting yesterday to lead Oak Ridge to victory over American Heritage. The final score was 66 to 62.

Lalanne, whose scoring total was right at his average for the year (19 points) also notched 7 rebounds and 3 blocked shots.

What was very different for yesterday's game was the fact that Lalanne was banged up a bit during the match, incurring a bit of a bloody nose and a turned ankle in a collision with another player. From all I understand, Cady should be available to play in Oak Ridge's next game.

Oak Ridge is now 8 and 3 on the year.

Lalanne Leads Oak Ridge to Victory

Cady Lalanne posted a double-double on Saturday to lead Oak Ridge High to a victory over Richwood High of Louisiana. The final score was 58 to 51. Oak Ridge improved to 7 and 3 on the year.

Lalanne scored 19 points on an efficient 7 of 12 from the field. He went just 5 off 9 from the free throw line, so there is still room for improvement on that stat line. Lalanne also had 10 rebounds and 5 blocked shots.

Lalanne is averaging 19 points and 13 rebounds so far in the season. The good news for Georgia is that he will continue to get better. As has been reported elsewhere, Lalanne didn't start playing basketball until his 8th grade year. At that time, he was 6' 3" and 180 pounds, and didn't have much in the way of basketball skill.

Since that time, however, Lalanne has improved every year. He is now 6' 9" and 220 pounds. He is a versatile player that can finish at the rack and shoot from the outside as well.

Once he gets weight training at UGA, Lalanne will be a formidable post presence for the Dawgs. Should be fun to watch him develop alongside Trey Thompkins.

Looks Like Billy, Plays Like Terrance?

I recently saw a picture of Josh Langford, UGA's basketball recruit, and it occurred to me that he looked a bit like Billy Humphrey. I guess it was the tatoos that made me think that way.

Josh Langford has reportedly moved Georgia to the top of his list, and if we can get him for 2010, it sounds like a good move to me. That means that next year we would lose Albert Jackson and Ricky McPhee, and add Gerald Robinson (the transfer who will be newly eligible in 2010/11), Cady Lalanne, and Langford.

If Langford signs, I'd still be somewhat concerned with the make-up of the 2010 class, because we really need a shooter, and Langford has been described as more of a combo forward than a sweet-shooting small forward. Then I remembered Terrance Woodbury. When Felton brought Woodbury in from Coastal Christian Academy, Terrance had mostly played center or power forward. It wasn't until the last part of his high school career that Woodbury began to develop the skill-set to play on the wing.

I remembered, too, that Woodbury had transferred from Granby High School to Coastal Christian. Although I wonder about players that jump from school to school (Langford transferred as a senior to Lee High School, where he plays now, and de-committed from Louisville), Woodbury worked out great for Georgia.

Maybe the same will be true for Langford. He has good hops, and is a slasher. He likes to get to the rim. At 6' 6", he has played mostly in the post. Can he work on his handles and find his niche at the 3-spot?

I sure hope so. If Langford keeps developing his jump-shot, Georgia might be okay offensively with Travis Leslie, Trey Thompkins, Cady Lalanne, Josh Langford, and Gerald Robinson providing the team with scoring punch.

At any rate, I think Langford will end up at Georgia. He is said to have Auburn and Alabama as the other major schools he is considering, and Auburn already has a jam-packed class for 2010 (something like 6 signees already). If I'm Langford, I see the lack of a scoring wing on UGA's squad, and I sign up at the next opportunity.

Lalanne scored 23 points with 8 rebounds Tuesday night to lead Oak Ridge to a victory over Harmony High.

In competition last week, Lalanne had 18 points, 14 rebounds and 7 blocked shots.

Oak Ridge is 2 and 2 on the year.

I know that some fans are not particularly excited about Lalanne because he is a 3-star. He is at #142 in the national rankings, instead of being a "top 20" kind of recruit. The comments underneath the article reflect those sentiments.

If, however, Fox can pick up Shawn Kemp, Jr., then UGA will have two talented post players with upside for the 2010 class. We'll need players like these if Georgia is to stabilize and grow its hoops program.

Lalanne to Dawgs

Good news!

Cady Lalanne has announced that he will sign with Coach Fox and the Dawgs.

The goal for Fox has to be to take the nucleus that he currently has and fit in the right pieces. If he can compress the schedule and make 2009 a successful year on the floor, and 2010 a superior recruiting year (Lalanne, Gerald Robinson, Shawn Kemp and Jalen Kendrick), then he will have the momentum he needs to make 2011 a great recruiting year.

Congrats to Coach Fox, staff and the team.

I like the way Lalanne finishes with a dunk. He knows what to do and how he's supposed to do it. He seems to run the floor fluidly. Keeps the ball up high on rebounds for put-backs. Has ability to score in close with either hand.

Lalanne needs to build his body more and gain more explosion off the ground. I also wonder if he "has the motor." Does he run hard the entire game and go all out for rebounds?

The best part about Lalanne is his upside. All the pieces are there. Good hands. Good form on his shot. Teachable kid. He has the height that you want a recruit to have, and he has the long arms that could make him a good rebounder.

The analogy breaks down at some point, but after watching the Hawks game last night, Lalanne reminds me somewhat of Al Horford. Horford was a guy who wasn't initially ranked, then bloomed somewhat late, going to #119 on the Rivals 150. He got better and better, and Florida was able to bag him.

If Lalanne works hard and gets into the right strength and conditioning program, he'll be able to tap into his potential. Hopefully, that process will take place at UGA. Expect to hear some news about Lalanne's commitment soon.
