Extraordinary Strength (Herschel Walker)

Have to thank Bernie Dawg for posting this one on his site. I haven't even gotten to the part of the message in which Herschel starts talking. I was just encouraged by the message from the pastor of Woodlands Church. Bernie said that Herschel did a great job, and that's endorsement enough for me to stop listening right away and post the link on my site.

Herschel Won Dickerson's Heisman?

And who is that Arps girl, anyway?

Very interesting article by ESPN. In case the link ever stops working, ESPN discusses the notion that Eric Dickerson had a better year than Herschel the year that Walker won the Heisman. Had Craig James not gone to SMU, Dickerson would have amassed more carries and likely achieved more touchdowns and total yards than Walker. As it was, Dickerson and Craig James both attended SMU, leading to the two tailbacks sharing carries as part of the "Pony Express" attack.

Craig James signed after Dickerson, but went to SMU anyway since his girlfriend was going to the school.

25 Amazing Facts about Herschel

Good format for the article about Herschel Walker. Every now and then it's good to be reminded about what an incredible athlete Walker was and is, and how great it was that he suited up in the Red and Black.

The Day Herschel Signed

Great article from the Chattanoogan. John Shearer writes about the Easter Sunday 30 years ago, when Herschel signed to come to Georgia.

Walker Recruitment Video

I saw on UGA.rivals.com the link to the YouTube video on Herschel Walker's recruitment, and I wanted to have it here on the Blog.

Didn't know that Herschel had a little basketball game.

Seven Superlatives from the UT Game

Travis Leslie got the Player of the Week award from the SEC. Great accomplishment.

Based on my review, however, there were some other guys out there whose contributions to the game and atmosphere deserve some sort of acknowledgement. So here, for all to see, or at least the five readers of the Blog (thanks, Mom) are my Seven Superlatives.

1. Most Likely to Succeed in MMA

Sorry Herschel, but Ajax gets the nod here. Jackson smoothly transitioned from a tussel underneath the hoop into an over the shoulder arm bar on Wayne Chism. The referee wisely jumped in to give Jackson the victory by submission.

2. Hop Along Cassidy Award: Trey Thompkins

What Travis Leslie lacks in demonstratives, Thompkins makes up. After he hit his three-pointer against UT, Thompkins rode the bronco back down the court.

3. Rocky Award

Whoever that Dude is in the stands.

'Nuff said.

4. All-Orange trophy: Bruce Pearl.

He wears orange. It may have been my cable system, but against Georgia, he even looked orange. Great that he won't be taking to the stairs, thanking all the UT fans, in the Steg any time soon.

5. Shimmy, Shimmy: Ebuka Anyaorah

Anyaorah got the bounce on the three-point attempt. He jumped up and shimmied down the court.

Pearl went ballistic afterwards. Had something to do with the clock, apparently, but his team wasn't going to win anyway. Pearl's reaction did make Ebuka's shot that much more enjoyable.

6. Most Likely to Break the Backboard

Jeremy Price. Scott Howard was spot on when he evoked Darrell Dawkins after the Jeremy Price first half thunder dunk.

Price gets some points taken off for having his shot blocked in the second half by Bruce Pearl's son. Very un-Dawkins like, that part.

7. Most Likely to Make us Barf

Peanut Butter Boy. Dude got his own write-up from ESPN. I thought sure he was a UT fan, with all that stuff smeared on, but he's all ours. Yuck.

Herschel Walker to Fight in January

We'll see how this turns out.

I'm not a big fan of MMA, and I am certainly not a fan of the move by Walker to get into the sport.

More news later.

"I Love Me Some Herschel Walker"

Herschel Walker is giving back. He recently took a break from his mixed martial arts training to help out a couple that works with terminally ill children.

Walker told his audience of the problems he encountered growing up as an overweight kid with a stuttering problem. Through the guidance of his parents and the influence of his brothers' high school coach, Walker was able to discover a healthy sense of self-esteem and hidden natural abilities for sports.

Herschel Walker Reviews Career

Guy was and is a talent, that's for sure. Big, fast, competitive.

Sometimes, fame makes it hard to adjust, live a regular life. To go from a small town in rural Georgia to becoming an almost idolized figure on a national stage must have been very difficult.

Good recap of Walker's life after football.

Herschel Walker and MMA

With all due respect to Walker, I don't see any way for this to end well.

If he wins, he might decide to fight more. Dangerous for his health.

If he loses, it could be dangerous for his health. He could really get hurt out there. Would his pride allow him to tap out?

How many of us have seen a boxer fight when he was past his prime? It's not even sport at that point. It's a pitiful, eyes-averting, shameful mess. I want to remember Herschel for his exploits in the gridiron, not for his mistake in entering the octagon.

Ex-football players need to realize that there's a reason why they're still not in the league.

Those advisors, sought out or not, who encourage you to be wise, hang up the cleats, sneakers, or bat and glove, are not disrespecting you, but rather doing you a favor. They are in fact giving you the ultimate compliment by urging you to see your own value, apart from what you can do athletically.

There's a way to gracefully leave the world of athletic competition. It's painful, but you find a way to do it. You give back to kids, do charity work, coach, become a commentator, choose a new line of work-- or even better, really focus in on life. Herschel Walker is uniquely positioned to show other athletes this path, this exit strategy, partly because he is still in shape and because he does have a measure of success outside of sports.

We each have our own lives to live. It's his decision to make. But if he asked me my opinion, I'd say,

"You're 47, you've got nothing to prove, and, No, I'm not going to fight you."

Sleeper Hold

Tell me it's not true. Herschel Walker deciding that he wants to fight MMA, and has signed a contract to do so.

The news would be boring, even sleep-inducing, if it weren't so dumb. He may be talented and have his black belt and all. But why would a man who in his own words has multiple personality disorders, go into the ring to take additional shots to the head?

And why would Herschel be interested at the age of 47 in proving he can fight just as well as a 20-year old? What does he need to prove and why does he feel the need to sign a contract to do so?

Let it go, dude.

My, How You've Grown!

Herschel Walker was quoted in Vince Dooley's "Tales from the 1980 Georgia Bulldogs" as saying that his success on the gridiron didn't stem so much from his individual running strength, "it was the offensive line. I had the best offensive line in football."

I looked back at the offensive line from 1980, and one thing jumped out at me: The guys from the 80's were tiny compared to the behemoths that man the line today.

1980/ 2009

Wayne Radloff: 245/ Ben Jones: 300
Tim Morrison: 254/ Vince Vance: 320
Nat Hudson: 265/ Clint Boling: 290
Jim Blackwood: 247/ Justin Anderson: 328
Jeff Harper: 245/ Cordy Glenn: 331

If the 2009 line were somehow to lose 300-lb Ben Jones, the 4 remaining players would still outweigh the 5 linemen from UGA's championship team. Of course, what the 1980 group lacked in size (every team was smaller back then), they made up for it with effort.

As Georgia prepares to start the 2009 season, at least one commentator has suggested that we could have the best offensive line in the country. Here's hoping we have a bigger version of the guys who won it all in 1980.
