Interview with Jeff Lebo

I thought Jeff Lebo did an incredible job last year. Auburn has been bad year after year. I wasn't sure how long Lebo would remain at the helm.

Then last year he gets some pretty good seniors, Korvotney Barber comes back reasonably healthy, and the next thing you know, people are pushing to have them in the NCAA tournament. They didn't quite make it, but the point of the article is that the SEC probably deserved more than 3 teams in the tourney, and if they had gotten one or two more in, Auburn would have been right there.

Expectations will spike with the new basketball arena. We'll see how Lebo and his squad hold up.

Auburn Plainsman

makes it plain regarding their opinion of Jeff Lebo.

I'm not expecting much from Auburn this year. Granted, they could overachieve. Backs against the wall, they might find a way to fight and scratch their way out of the cellar in the SEC West. But the roster does not seem to be there for Lebo.

Korvotney Barber is a hustle guy, someone who plays bigger than his size. He's healthy this year and he will definitely help Auburn's performance. But is he the kind of player that will out-talent other SEC big men? I don't think so.

Will Auburn's freshmen and Juco newcomers provide them with enough depth to move toward the top of the SEC West? The jury is still out. Lebo will have to do his best coaching job ever to make it happen.

Folks seem to like Lebo. The construction of the new arena, however, has ratcheted up the expectations.

Bleacher Report Reviews Auburn Basketball

The Bleacher Report does a good job with their reviews.

And that's just the point on their review of Auburn basketball. Despite the thoroughness of the report, I just don't see a lot here for Auburn. Am I missing something? The guys could be a lot better than I expect, but I don't see that Auburn upgraded their prospects for winning in the 2008/2009 season.

Besides that, what happened to the guy Auburn recruited from North Carolina? Is he still part of their class this year?

Transgressions, Talent and Turnover

Have discussed this issue before with regard to Coach Felton, but the attached article does the topic a little bit better than I have.

What do you do when a player messes up? What are the standards? Does the player's talent level factor into the decision?

http://nashvillecitypaper.com/news.php?viewStory=61905

Since Jeff Lebo has had 15 players leave for one reason or another in the five years that he has coached, how will he handle the next discipline issue?

Dismissal and Transfers

No, not Felton. This time it's Jeff Lebo and the Auburn basketball program.

Josh Dollard has been dismissed. A 12-pt and 7 rebound per game power forward in 2006, Dollard sat out last year due to medical reasons, and was dismissed before the 2008/2009 season got under way. In other off-season developments, reserves Boubacar Sylla and Matt Heramb have transferred. That's three big players fewer for an Auburn squad that already was on the smallish side.

Although Auburn has a class of five freshmen coming in, none of the newcomers ranked above 3 stars, according to Rivals. Could be good players, but it's unknown how much help they will be once the SEC portion of the schedule gets going.

There is some good news for Auburn fans, and that is that Korvotney Barber should be back from the broken hand he suffered last year. He averaged 14 pts and 7 rebounds prior to his injury. Further, Auburn would likely have continued to use a guard-heavy line-up, even if Dollard, Sylla and Heramb had stuck around. Assuming the guards get most of the playing time this year, and that Korvotney Barber is healthy, the incoming freshmen big men should have some time to adjust before being called upon to play a lot of minutes.

The problem for Lebo is that he also lost key contributors Frank Tolbert (13 pts and 5 rebounds per game) and Quan Prowell (15 pts and 6 boards per game) due to graduation. Add that natural turnover to the one dismissal and the two transfers, and factor in an SEC that figures to be stronger than last year, and Auburn might not improve much over last year's 4 and 12 SEC record.

Auburn is committing to basketball, nonetheless. I imagine that recruiting will start to pick up the closer they get to the opening of their new basketball arena. Jeff Lebo might have to do his best coaching job to hold it all together until then.
